Can a Muslim be a hypocrite? I know after seeing the title most of the people must be thinking, “What’s new in this?” after all hypocrites exist among Muslims only, who live among Muslims by showing themselves as Muslims, but actually they are mainly against Islam. Yes of course you thought right; this is usually what hypocrites are. But do you know that a person who believes himself to be a true Muslim can also be a hypocrite; Now this thing may be a bit strange to you, and it should be, because the general concept of Muslims is that the hypocrite is only the one who works against Islam by wearing a cloak of Islam. But the reality is different; we can say that these are also hypocrites, but not only these; there is also another category of hypocrites. I am not saying that by myself, but the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and life of his Companions are witness to the fact that we have not yet fully understood the issue of hypocrisy or we consciously ignore it, unfortunately.

Can a Muslim be a hypocrite? I will make my point in short out of a few hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, so that there is left no scope for doubts, and the issue would be clear. Now look at some hadiths:

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (PBUH) said, The signs of a hypocrite are three:
1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise).
3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest. (If you keep something as a trust with him, he will not return it.)
Sahih Bukhari (33), Sahih Muslim (211, 212)

It was further explained in this hadith with another sign:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: The Prophet said, Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.
1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil, and insulting manner.
Sahih Bukhari (34)

Let me make one point clear here, that I had once heard of this hadith from Arabic scholar Shaykh Noman Ali Khan, that usually that fourth sign is translated as abusing in anger, whereas the particular Arabic word there means losing control, means an angry person who loses his temper. But whatever happens, in both meaning we have a thing to worry about. The person with these habits has got fatwa to be a pure hypocrite by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, and if someone has one habit, he has also a characteristic of hypocrisy, until he leaves it.  May ALLAH SWT protect us.

I have given references 211 and 212 from Sahih Muslim above. Just in the next hadith, hadith number 213, a more strict explanation of them is given. Read carefully:

Yahya b. Muhammad b. Qais Abu Zukeer reported that he heard ‘Ala’ b. ‘Abdur-Rahman narrating this hadith with this chain of transmitters and he said: Three are the signs of a hypocrite, even if he observed fast and prayed and asserted that he was a Muslim.
Sahih Muslim (213)

This hadith shakes us deeply, its words are very strict, we need to be very alert. These are common causes of today’s Muslims, and it seems that in this hadith those with these habits who fast, perform salah, and consider themselves to be Muslims are severely threatened, that beware! Never adopt these habits.

So, friends, this is not such a mild issue, we can easily get arrested in this, what do you think, when Hazrat Umar r.a was silently going to Razdar-e-Rasul Hazrat Huzaifa r.a to ask if his name was there in the list of hypocrites; was it in his mind that I am the enemy of Islam inside; Mazallah! Not at all! He was the leader of Islam, he should have sat comfortably thinking that the hypocrites are just those who wear the cloak of Islam and stay against Islam inside, but not! They knew the reality of hypocrite; which ordinary Muslims do not know today, unfortunately, and the fear of it is a sign of strong faith in itself.

Even today after reading this, if it creates fear and worry in your heart, then it is a sign of your faith. Those people need to fear who comfortably consider themselves to be a believer, and they never felt that way even after indulging in these evils. They need to turn to their Lord by repentance and seeking forgiveness today.

But remember that I have told the basic principle, so that we may protect ourselves and others from these evils. We do not have to decide on anyone else’s manifestation, it is the right of ALLAH to decide. Rather we shall look inside ourselves if we are caught for hypocrisy under those principles, and also do Islaah of others. Do not start distributing fatwas on hypocrisy by looking at someone’s manifest! May ALLAH SWT protect us from these evil habits.

Unfortunately, these evils have become a part of the common life of Muslims today. May ALLAH SWT protect us and keep us in his protection from these evils!
