Violence

It is a widely held view that Muslim means a violent person. When we hear this word, it automatically creates a picture of a person with a skull cap, trimmed mustaches, and a long beard, in our mind. Malcolm X, American Minister & Human rights activist said- “If you are not careful, the newspaper will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”The followers of Islam are spread worldwide. There can be found violent and threatening people in all religions. But, those are exceptions, not the norm. Islam is the religion of peace. The word Islam is derived from ‘Sal’m’ means ‘peace’. Highlighting a tiny group of people should not generalize the whole community. Germans can not be assumed to be violent on the basis of Adolf Hitler’s massive brutality.

Terrorism

There is a common belief that all terrorists are Muslim. Terrorist attack committed by an individual or a group having an Arabic or Muslim name does not represent the teachings of Islam. Quran condemns such kind of activity. Quran-Al Maida:32 “If anyone Therefore teachings of Quran and terrorism are exact opposite. Whenever these acts take place, Muslims (common people & scholars) denounce terrorism. Because of just a few people, involved in such activity, the rest of the people can not be judged. Quran does indeed allow the use of violence but under certain specific conditions only. First in self-defense and second to establish justice and peace. But such actions are to be taken by a legitimate Muslim government, not by individuals or a group of people.

Islam promotes Polygamy

An Nisa:3 “Marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, or four, and if you fear that you will not be equitable (between them), then marry Only One. This is more suitable and it will save you from doing injustice”.Surely the Quran permits a man to marry more than one woman, but at the same time, it also warns against being biased an unjust between wives. No religious book preaches against polygyny, including the Quran. While only the Quran puts a maximum limit of four wives and makes it a condition to be just between wives.

Forceful Conversion

Al Baqara:256 “There is no compulsion in religion. The Right Way stands clearly distinguished from the wrong. Hence he who rejects the evil ones and believes in Allah has indeed taken hold of the firm, unbreakable handle” It has commonly been assumed that Islam was spread by the sword. But point to be noted is that no one would change his/her religion forcefully for the entire life and for generations. Muslims account for 24% of the global population and are the 2nd largest religious group not because of forceful conversions but because of the beauty of Islam. An Nahl:125 “Invite people unto the way of your Rabb with wisdom and pleasant preaching, and discuss with them arguing in the best manner.”
